Hard gel vs. gel polish vs. acrylic: which is right for your nails?
Three ways to wear colour, three very different results. How hard gel, gel polish and acrylic compare on strength, wear and removal, and who each one suits.
Ask for "gel" at three different salons and you can walk out with three different things. Gel polish, hard gel and acrylic all look glossy on day one. They behave very differently by week three, and even more differently when they come off.
If you're looking for a hard gel manicure in San Diego, or just trying to work out why your last set peeled, here is the plain version.
The short answer
- Gel polish is colour. A thin, flexible coat cured under a lamp. Lovely on nails that are already strong.
- Hard gel is structure. A sculpted layer that reinforces your own nail while it grows. Colour can go on top or be built in.
- Acrylic is length. A rigid powder-and-liquid material, mostly used to build extensions.
Gel polish: colour, not protection
Gel polish is applied like a regular polish and set under a lamp, so it's dry the moment you leave. Because it's thin and flexible, it bends with the nail. That is also its limit: if your nails are soft, peel, or break at the tip, a thin coat bends right along with them, and chips or lifts follow.
Most gel polish is removed by soaking in acetone. Done patiently, that's fine. Done in a hurry, with scraping, it's where a lot of thin, sore nails come from.
Good for: naturally strong nails, short wear, and a colour you'll change often.
Hard gel: your own nail, protected while it grows
Hard gel is a thicker, sculpted layer shaped over your natural nail. It's stronger than gel polish and lighter than acrylic. It doesn't add fake length. It gives your own nail a shell, so it stops breaking and can grow out.
- Wear: three weeks and more. Most of our clients come back for a refresh at three to four weeks.
- Growth line: with our under-cuticle technique the new growth stays hard to see for two weeks or more, so the manicure looks just-done for longer.
- Removal: filed off, never soaked in acetone. Your nail comes back intact.
- Shape: strongest on a short-to-medium oval or almond, where the structure is best and snags are least likely.
Good for: weak, peeling or bitten nails, anyone growing their nails out, and anyone who wants a natural look that lasts.
Acrylic: built for length
Acrylic is a powder mixed with a liquid monomer, sculpted and left to harden. It's very rigid, which is why it's the classic choice for long extensions. That same rigidity means it doesn't flex with your nail, and removal usually means a long acetone soak or heavy filing.
Good for: dramatic length and shape. If length is what you want, ask about gel extensions too.
Side by side
- Strength: gel polish is light. Hard gel is reinforcing. Acrylic is rigid.
- Feel: gel polish is thin. Hard gel feels light and natural. Acrylic feels thicker.
- Coming off: gel polish soaks off in acetone. Hard gel is filed off. Acrylic is soaked or filed.
- Best for: gel polish suits strong nails. Hard gel suits weak or growing nails. Acrylic is for length.
What to ask any salon before you book
What's in the gel? HEMA is a common cause of gel allergies. Ask if the formula is HEMA-free.
How will it come off? Ask how the removal is done, and whether they file it off or soak it.
How are the tools cleaned? Metal tools should come out of a sealed, sterilised pouch at your appointment. Files and buffers should be single-use.
What about the dust? Filing makes fine dust. A good studio pulls it away at the table.
How we do it at Svitnail
We use Luxio by Akzentz gel: HEMA- and TPO-free, 10-free, cruelty-free and made in Canada. Every metal tool is sterilised in a medical autoclave and every file is single-use. SHEMAX extraction at each table captures 99.5% of the dust. Our PRO 2.0 SMART LIGHT lamps cure the gel.
Before we touch your nails, we look at them and tell you honestly what they can handle. Sometimes that's hard gel. Sometimes it's a few weeks of Russian manicures on bare nails first.
- Hard gel manicure: from $120, gel colour included. Choose from 40+ hard gel shades, mostly nudes, or 150+ gel polish colours.
- Russian manicure, no polish: from $65.

- Removing gel from another salon: an additional $20. Please have acrylic or dip removed before your visit.
Questions we hear
Will hard gel ruin my nails?
Hard gel is designed to protect your nail, and it's filed off, never soaked. Damage usually comes from rough removal or from picking a set off at home. If a set starts to lift, come in and let us take it off.
Can I get hard gel on short nails?
Yes. Short-to-medium oval is where hard gel is strongest.
How often do I need a refresh?
Every three to four weeks for most clients.
I have gel or acrylic from another salon. Can I still come in?
We can remove gel from another salon for an additional $20. Please have acrylic or dip taken off before your appointment.
