Manicures in San Diego: Which One Should You Book?
Classic, Russian, gel polish, hard gel or extensions? How the main manicures in San Diego differ, who each one suits, and what to ask before you book.
Most manicures in San Diego fall into five kinds: a classic manicure, a dry Russian manicure, gel polish, hard gel, and extensions. The right one depends on what you want from your nails: a clean natural look, colour, strength while your own nail grows, or length. Here is how they differ, what each one suits, and what to ask before you book.
The short answer
- A clean, natural look: a Russian (dry) manicure on bare nails.
- Nails that would like extra care: a Russian manicure with a strengthening treatment such as IBX.
- Colour with no commitment: a manicure with a plant-based polish or a gentle gel polish.
- Colour and strength together: hard gel over your own nail.
- Length: extensions.
What kinds of manicures can you get in San Diego?
Classic manicure. Hands soak in warm water, the cuticle is softened and pushed back, the nails are shaped and polished. Simple and familiar.
Russian manicure. A dry manicure: no soaking bowl. The artist cleans the cuticle area with an electric file (an e-file) and fine tools, so the nail looks finished right down to its base. We explain it step by step in What is a Russian manicure?
Gel polish. A thin, flexible coat of colour, set under a lamp, so you leave with dry nails. It is colour, not structure.
Hard gel. A thicker, sculpted layer over your natural nail. It is stronger than gel polish and lighter than acrylic, and it gives your own nail a shell while it grows. Our hard gel vs. gel polish vs. acrylic guide compares the three side by side.
Extensions. Added length, built from acrylic, soft-gel tips or gel shaped in a form. The material decides how the set feels and how it comes off.
Which manicure is gentlest on natural nails?
The gentlest manicure is the one that suits your nails and is done with care. A dry Russian manicure on bare nails keeps things simple: no soak, no colour to remove later, just shape, a clean cuticle line and a natural sheen. With regular visits, cuticles tend to grow back more evenly.
If you'd like extra care for thin nails, a strengthening treatment is a kind next step. At Svitnail we love IBX, a treatment that works within the nail rather than sitting on top of it. It comes as part of our Russian manicure with IBX.
How colour comes off matters as much as how it goes on. Rushed removal, with scraping, is hard on any nail. Ask how a salon removes what it applies before you choose it.
Which manicure lasts the longest?
Of the options for your own nails, hard gel wears the longest. Ours is made for 3+ weeks of wear, and it is filed off, never soaked in acetone, so your nail comes back intact.
Gel polish sits in the middle. The Manucurist Green Flash gel polish we use wears up to 7–10 days with its top coat and removes in about a minute, with no drill and no acetone. A regular or plant-based polish is the lightest choice: easy to change whenever you feel like a new shade.
How much does a manicure cost in San Diego?
Prices vary from salon to salon and with what is included: the technique, the product, removal of an old set, and the artist's level. When you compare, check that you are comparing the same service. Here is what we charge at Svitnail in La Jolla:
- Russian manicure, bare nails: from $65. Add Manucurist polish, HEMA- and TPO-free and made in France, for $35.
- Russian manicure with IBX: from $90.
- Hard gel manicure: from $120, gel colour included.
- Extensions: $230 with a Top Artist, one price at any length.
- Removing gel from another salon: an additional $20. Please have acrylic or dip removed before your visit.
What should you ask a San Diego salon before you book?
The American Academy of Dermatology suggests a few simple checks: whether your nail technician has the experience and license required, whether the stations are clean, and, in its words, "do not hesitate to ask how they clean their tools." In California, manicurists are licensed by the Board of Barbering and Cosmetology, and you can check a license on the state's Verify a License search.
A few more questions that help you choose:
- How are metal tools sterilised, and are files single-use?
- Which gel or polish brand do you use, and is it HEMA-free?
- How do you remove gel: filing, soaking, or something else?
- Will someone look at my nails first and tell me what they can handle?

How we do manicures at Svitnail in La Jolla
Every manicure starts with a look at your nails and an honest word about what they can handle. Sometimes that means hard gel. Sometimes it means a few Russian manicures on bare nails first.
Every metal tool is sterilised in a medical autoclave and opened from a sealed pouch at your appointment; anything that can't be sterilised is single-use. Our hard gel is Luxio by Akzentz, HEMA- and TPO-free, with 40+ hard gel shades, mostly nudes, and 150+ gel polish colours. With a Russian manicure you can choose Manucurist polish, from a clean beauty brand in Paris.
And there is a complimentary drink while you choose your shade. An hour that's yours.
Questions we hear
Is a dry manicure safe?
Yes, when it is done by a trained artist with properly sterilised tools. An e-file is a precision tool, so ask about both before you book anywhere. At Svitnail every specialist is certified in the SVITNAIL Technique™.
Do you do nail extensions?
Yes. We build gel extensions on dual forms, $230 with a Top Artist, one price at any length.
I'm not sure which manicure to book. What should I choose?
Book the one closest to what you want, and tell your artist at the start. We look at your nails first and suggest what suits them, so you're never locked into a choice you're unsure of.
I have gel from another salon. Can I still come in?
Of course. We can remove gel from another salon for an additional $20. Please have acrylic or dip taken off before your appointment.
